Taking Inspiration to the Next Level

Hello All,

If you're interested in becoming a game developer of some kind you have gotten inspiration from a game you've played or have seen.  You've most likely played or seen a game that moved you to say "I want to create something like this". For every game developer there was a different game that inspired them to do what they do. Of course, it's just not one game, but often times many games that inspire you to keep learning and to keep the passion you have for games going. We often have moments in our life when you are doing something you love and you can say "This is what I want to do."

Bard of Existence

When you are inspired by something you usually can see that thing in your work that you do. If you create games and you are inspired by the Legend of Zelda series you will see bits and pieces of the strategy and puzzle solving elements in your work as you go. As game developers, when we get an interview it is very important for us to have a great portfolio to show our skills. Throughout your time in college or university you can create a diverse set of skills that you should be able to put together to present an outstanding portfolio. Portfolio pieces, are pieces of work that show off your skills. They can be levels, piece of art, documentation, or even some pieces of code that you've done. They can be replica's of models from games, or even your own characters. I've recently been watching a couple videos of game designers who have recreated a lot of the older Legend of Zelda levels in the Unreal 4 Engine. He created them all on his own by using the game as a map to show him where everything goes and how it looks. Check out below a couple videos that I've seen of designers recreating game levels in more detail than what they were originally done in.
