The newest Humanities course at University of Advancing Technology (UAT) is The 1980s, taught by Professor Belanger and is so much fun! Since it is a brand new course, he is testing out different assignments and tests, but so far it has been extremely eye opening. In this course, you learn about so many things in the 1980s that weren't taught in a regular history class. Despite it not being a history class, I am learning so much about the '80s. If you were born before or during the '80s, this class will give you a sense of nostalgia.
This week, we'll be watching After School Specials to experience what it was like to watch one. We will dissecting it and learning about its importance to those who grew up in the '80s. A unique thing that happens in class is we have two special DJs per week who choose one song to bring to class that came out in the '80s. The class then discussed the music video, the importance of the band/singer, and how it impacted the generation.
We also discuss movies that were made in the 1980s and the different genres that were popular. We also discuss the trends that happened throughout the decade. For example, we watched The Day After which is about nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia. It was very impactful, and it's more realistic with what's going on in the current state of the world.
If you have the opportunity to take this class, I highly recommend it. It's fun, educational, even the assignments are exciting, who doesn't love that? You're able to travel back in time during the class and really learn about what it was like to live during the 1980s. It helps put things into perspective.
